Bhagyanath (b. 1968) was born in Thalassery in Kannur district, Kerala. After receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts (Painting) from the College of Fine Arts, Triavandrum in 1992, he worked as a teacher for a few years and then went on to do his Masters in Fine Arts (Painting) from the University of Hyderabad.
Bhagyanath’s drawings study the human psyche. He is intrigued by the human mind’s capacity to experience of a multitude of emotions — peace and chaos, solitude and loneliness, regret and fulfillment, often overlapping with each other. Is there union or discord between the mind and body—this, he feels, is a constant dialogue in his works. Bhagyanath is also a much feted illustrator and has been interpreting literary works for the past 20 years.
Bhagyanath’s solo exhibitions include his drawing exhibition at Kashi Art Gallery, Kochi (2010-11); Project 88, Mumbai (2009); Kashi Art Gallery (2006); Metamorphosis: Change and Continuity at Indian Art at Phyllis Weston-Annie Boiling Gallery, USA (2000); Evidentia at Sumukha Gallery, Bangalore (2009); India Art Fair at Palette Art Gallery (2020, 2022); Rendering Multitudes at LATITUDE 28, New Delhi (2018); Secret Dialogues at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, Kochi (2016-17); Contemporary Contingencies at Gallery OED, Kochi (2015); group show at Nature Morte, New Delhi (2017); Lokame Tharavadu group exhibition at Alappuzha (2021); and the 6th Jeju Paints Asia - The Joint Exhibition of Asia’s Representative Artists in Jeju, Korea (2022).
I am trying to portray the versatile roles enacted by Bachchan. This itself is sufficient to reflect on the diversity of India. The characters are interacting on a theatrical stagelike platform and they are all engaged in an ongoing dialogue.
