In 1963, the Ford Motor Company tried to buy Ferrari so it could be the centerpiece of Fords Total Performance campaign that emphasized endurance racing. Ferrari had won the 24 Hours of Le Mans race the previous three years, and company founder Enzo Ferrari was interested in selling. But at the last minute he spurned Fords offer, which led to Henry Ford IIs basically saying, It doesnt matter, lets go beat them (which planted the seeds for the thoroughly enjoyable but not entirely accurate Ford versus Ferrari movie that came decades later). The task of unseating Ferrari would prove more difficult than Ford imagined for even with an unlimited budget, it took three years for the American company to take the checkered flag at Le Mans. In line with its Total Performance philosophy, racing wins and technology had to pass to the street so 31 road going GT40s were made in 1966, the year of that first Le Mans victory. The MK I road car, like the one seen in this NFT, closely resembled the racers, and it was one of the fastest, most exhilarating drives of its day. The road cars had a 335-horspower 289 V8 and 5-speed transaxle, and in magazine tests they repeatedly touched or cleared 160 mph—a big number for the era. Several GT40 variants were made from 1964-1968/9 and total production of all the cars was 133, according to marque expert Ronnie Spain. For Fords 100th anniversary in 2003, the GT40 was born again as the Ford GT, as seen in our first NFT drop. Between 2004-2006, 4,038 GTs were constructed, and today they remain a darling for collectors of modern supercars. In 2015 the latest version of the Ford GT broke cover, and the car won its class at Le Mans in 2016. Sale of the road version began in 2017, and a total of 1,350 will have been made by the time production ends in 2022.
