Self-taught artist, photographer, sculptor, poet, ex-banker and chartered accountant George Kuruvilla (b. 1950) is a ‘neo realist’ artist. He works with photo prints in innovative ways. His art finds form in the formlessness of the medium he works with. Photography was the medium that fascinated him and pulled him away from a corporate life, towards his creative side.
Working a lot on paper and embossed steel, he prints images to evoke an antiquated era when images were not crisp or crystal clear. It’s a hazy reality out there, for him.
What he works with is light in a dramatic fashion, to hint at moods and emotions—the shadows in his works bring about a subdued emotion and the light lifts viewers into optimism.
Light plays upon the polarity of hope and despair, hinting at the passage of life.
His sculptures are inspired by the transgender people who gather annually during the Aravan temple festival in South India. He captures their lives in his life-size, vividly coloured, super realistic fiberglass sculptures.
Amitabh Bachchan in his roles in multiple movies and television shows exemplified the aspirational desire of the post-independence generation.
This generation set the stage for the current youth as they rose to answer the theme, ‘Koi Baat Chota Nahi Hota’ (Nobody is small). Every Indian is important.
