Suneel Mamadapur (b. 1975) is an artist, designer and teacher based in Hyderabad. He is a painter, printmaker and collaborator in many site-specific practices whose work explores landscapes of power, desire, and the narrativesmade through them. His works, primarily built around an edgy surrealist vocabulary with its associated shifts and substitutions of images and visual registers, are deeply concerned with the ethical dimensions of contemporary life. He uses fable as a genre to stage the dilemmas that face modern man. He feels that fables have the capability to marry topicality with a populist and didactic aspect that can address a wider audience. His allegorical imagination is tied to an urgent moral imperative and utilizes all the linguistic means that the genre puts at his disposal in order to uncover the iniquities that lie hidden beneath the codes that govern social life. His works resemble parables in their structural organization, drawing upon the minutiae of everyday life, and these are often combined and recombined in surprising and unusual ways in order for them to be able to deliver their ‘message’. Although fables by their nature are not wordy and so are not really fertile territory for ‘interpretation’, Suneel overcomes this buttress by significant recourse to the modernist tradition. In this work, I portray Mr. Bachchan as a fantasy everyone aspires to live in. His fandom transcends language, culture and politics. And this is quite astonishing in a country like India, an almost impossible democracy around the globe. Here, the audience always looks up to their hero and expects him to lead them to a marvellous life by taking away their agony of reality, and if he fails to accomplish so, they feel dejected. But amidst all, he has been able to maintain his status as a modern divinity, a perfect hero, while mastering so many other elements of life. By using bright colours and portraying him as a contemporary deity, I also want to depict this countrys vast brightness and multi-layered culture. He is like a celebration, any festival India celebrates, and my work celebrates this intangible hero of many.
