Shipra (b. 1954) is an artist from Kolkata known for the emotions she evokes through paintings of people, their desires and their reality, against the various nuances of the city she resides in. Her recent undertaking includes paintings and sculptures with intricate details and imprints on the body that reaffirm the old adage that we humans are but a mere culmination of our experiences and surroundings. Shipra’s earlier works in the 80s and 90s about the life of common men and women gradually shifted in focus to the female form during the 2000s. Her unique use of vivid colours and her style of drawing the female anatomy urges the viewer to think and feel for the women painted against various emotional contexts. Shipra is the founding trustee of the Arts Acre institution in Calcutta. Her artworks adorn various government, corporate and private collections and have been exhibited widely both nationally and internationally. When not painting, you might find her tending to her plants across a lush, sprawling garden surrounding her studio in Calcutta. A close friend gave me sample papers made by St Cuthberts Mill in England. Then I chanced upon some textile scraps and rice paper that had been lying around for years. Together, these formed small mantras of aesthetics about our country. All the material is made by people unknown to me yet the textures blend together and hold tight, like so much that is right about our country. I have been working with Zaheer Ahmad, a Khurja based potter, for the last 20 years now. For me, art is not a solo activity; to create anything beautiful we have to come together.
